Question:

We are looking to refurbish a surgery and I was wondering if anyone could recommend anyone in the North Yorkshire area (we are in Harrogate). We would like to ideally use a local firm but would look at the larger dental suppliers if they are recommended.

Answer:

We have recently refurbished 3 surgeries. Initially we used Henry Schein for 1^st one but the project management was not very good and the cost was extortionate. We therefore moved on to use a local plumber/electrician (one’s that we use regularly anyway) and a fabricator who made us corian worktops for 1/3 of the price of henry schein. We re-used our cabinets as they fitted fine. Much more cost effective and looks fab!

I appreciate my contacts are Scottish based, but can recommend them to anyone. Lab Plus installed my LDU and also specialise in surgeries too.

Peter Connolly is an excellent Project Manager who remains on site and makes sure the job gets done. Everything was done on time and well within budget.

We recently had a surgery refurbished & used the services of DB Dental who are based in West Yorkshire.

They project managed every aspect of the job & through no one’s fault when there was a miscommunication & the floor needed to be replaced; they ensured this was done free of charge.

The aftercare has been good too & the job was completed on time.

I appreciate you are looking for someone in the North Yorkshire area but they travelled to Manchester for our refurbishment & I know of another dentist who has used their services in Leeds who recommended them to us.

We have just had a refurb by a local company to us, but they would be more than happy to work in Harrogate. MWC construction, contact name Martin Watson 07816303118.

We have had a larger supplier in last year for a single surgery and hand on heart what I will say is – we did not know martin’s guys were even here, they came in got on the job was completed quickly and its beautiful. Timelines were kept to and there was minimal disruption to our working day – which the dentist’s loved.

We are part of a small corporate and recently had our surgeries fitted out by RPA Dental based in Wigan (telephone 01942 245808). We are very happy with the quality of their work.

We have recently relocated and renovated an entire building ; installing 7 new surgeries and a decontamionation room . Although not local to you I would highly recommend “Armstrong Young” Amberley House, beacon Road, Crowborough East Sussex.TN6 1AS . I cannot fault any aspect of their workmanship, an extremely professional company that looks after your requirements from start to finish.  Excellent customer care. Highly recommended.

I would highly recommend McKillop Dental.

Simon Pearce from there is really good – gives good advice and never tries to sell you anything! Also customer care before, during and after surgery placement is superb. They also have an engineer who is based in Yorkshire.

One of our nurses uses the GDC website for all her CPD. There is a CPD section and she fills it in every time she goes on a course etc. It seems to work quite well for her!

We use many different CPD providers but the one online is CTS, it’s free but you are limited to what subject is on offer.

We use DCP Update for the team. Just register online, it’s easy to use and very reasonable.

We have used FMC’s CPD in practice team edition, which is in magazine format but can be completed online. It is straight-forward and covers 10 hours core verifiable CPD so that the essentials are covered, leaving the rest of the year to find more relevant and specific CPD for staff throughout the year – www.fmc.co.uk.

I have been using the dental nurse network, it’s around £25 pp pa but well worth it. Try the website: www.dental-nursing.co.uk. Each nurse will be issued with their own CPD access. Approx £200.00 pa.

Answer:

This was actually one of the first things I had to arrange when I arrived here in October. I found that the CPD available online wasn’t measurable with most sites and it was simply just a case of reading an article and that’s it – CPD hours done and a box ticked. However I was recommended www.RDSurgery.com which we find really useful as unlike many other websites there is a test at the end of the articles and subjects. These tests are completed online and the results are immediate with a certificate to print out and as the Practice Manager it is easy to monitor. Its fairly cheap right now as it has been heavily subsidised (currently £25 per head) but it may go up next year.

It’s been seven months since we subscribed and it has been very popular amongst the staff and apart from the core CPD subjects, there are also other articles that my nurses find useful.

We do a lot of lunch and learns with the reps – free lunch and free CPD, also our college does courses some are free eg. cross infection.  We received 70 hours verifiable free and this year equality and diversity.   £20.00 per staff member,  100 hours verifiable maybe worth while checking your college. Some staff  do the free CPD in the BDA for non-verifiable also just put down reading magazines, internet etc.
